Solar news in the USA and Canada

MK Nature Design reviews news about solar energy and makes comments about the USA and Canada.  Solar panels in general are getting smaller and smaller.  Soon they will be everywhere!

It has been reported that solar panels are getting smaller and thinner (Vox Energy and Environment, June 23, 2016).  Solar PV cells can be one micrometer thick.  These very thin solar cells can be put onto “clothes, glasses, hats and backpacks” and power our portable devices.  With these solar PV cells we can harvest the sun’s energy anywhere.  However these solar PV cells are very expensive now.  They can even be modified to be put on our skin.  In time though the costs will come down.  Read more here.

Solar power is to grow sixfold by 2030 (Bloomberg Technology, June 22, 2016).  The Renewable Energy Agency predicts this will happen as solar power generation costs fall below natural gas and coal energy generation.  By 2030, eight or 13 % of energy will be created by solar compared to 1.2 % at the end of last year.  By 2025 it is expected that the cost of solar energy production will decrease by 59%.  By 2030 solar and wind power will be the cheapest way to produce energy.  Read more in this article.

USA is generating 30 times more energy since Obama came into office (Ecowatch, July 20, 2016).  The USA Government has given incentives for solar power panels on roofs to make it more affordable for everyone.  It wants to provide 1 gigawatt of solar power to low and middle income households by 2020.  There will be such a thing as the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Financing to promote solar energy.  If you wish you can read more here.

Los Vegas has the USAs largest rooftop solar array  (Ecowatch, July 19, 2016).  It consists of 26,000 individual solar panels and is on the roof of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.   The solar panels which cover 28 acres will produce 25% of the conventions electricity.  This is equivalent of providing electricity for 1300 homes.  Read more with this link.

Canadian Solar Inc. has entered into a project sale agreement with China (PR Newswire, July 6, 2016).  It is one of the world’s largest solar power companies and was founded in 2001.  It is a leading fabricator of solar photovoltaic modules and a leader in solar energy solutions.  It has shipped solar modules to over 90 countries in the world.  For more information go to their website.
