Ruby-Throated Hummingbird – Watercolor

ruby-throated-hummingbird-2-wtrclrMK Nature Design is happy to release her watercolor Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.  It is a watercolor painting on Saunders Waterford paper.

The ruby-throated hummingbird is a common bird in Southern Ontario.  Its summer range is the southern parts of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario,Quebec, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, Canada reaching all the way down to Florida.  The winter range is in Florida.  It is only 3 3/4″ (10 cm) long.  The male has a fiery red throat, forked tail and green back.  It is the only widespread species of hummingbird in the east.  Habitat is gardens, feeders, flowers, and wood edges  (Peterson Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America; 2002:  New York, p. 204).

This painting was done to spoil myself.  I needed a break from my animal portrait painting that I have been doing recently and decided to pick up a completely different medium, watercolor.  I have always struggled with the background of my paintings, especially watercolor.  At the same time I drew and painted a small landscape in watercolor.  Working with the landscape helped me decide where to add detail to draw the eye to the focal point of the painting.  This painting was done during a time where I am trying to deal with my anxiety…a time that is scary and requires much courage.  I made the background dark to focus the gaze in the center but perhaps the darkness reflected my mood as well.  Yet there is an underlying positive aspect to my existence that has saved me in the past and will also save me in the future.  I think that this is reflected in the light colors of the background.  It was both calming and a joy to paint this painting.

As usual, this painting is available for purchase.  I have yet to develop a price per square inch which I think I have to do next since this painting is not the same size as my usual pastel paintings.  For now the price is $250.00 framed and $200 unframed.  Prints are available for the usual price.  Please see the 2016 Price List above on my blog website.   Please also see the Contact list to get in touch with me.
